Google, having captured the greatest market in search engine industry, has long been silent on their ways algorithms as bases to rank pages in their search engine results pages (SERP’s). It would be necessary so that their search engine would not be controlled by the hand of spammers and black hat SEO. One thing is for sure, Google cannot possibly give up to deliver highly relevant contents on every search key being typed down on the search space. That is why SEO companies and personalities can only draw conclusion how Google works based on the result and general trends of top ranking sites on every topic niche.
Way back to 1997 when Sergey Brin and Lawrence Page proposed “The Anatomy of a Large-Scale Hypertextual Web Search Engine” and present “Google” as a a prototype of a large-scale search engine, the PageRank Algorithm was made known. Later additions were Sandbox Algorithm, then the most important one is the Hilltop Algorithm.
The PageRank Algorithm evaluates a particular page based on its link structure throughout the web.
It was orginally formulated as PR(A) = (1-d) + d (PR(T1)/C(T1) + … + PR(Tn)/C(Tn)) where,
PR is the PageRank
A is the page under evaluation
T1, . . . , Tn are pages linking to A
d is the damping factor which can be set between 0 and 1 (usually set to 0.85)
C(T)’s are number of links going out of page T.
It defines a probability distribution of links for A across the web. If Page A points a topic or keyword (using hyperlinked) to Page B, then PageRank Algorithm gives more credit to Page B over Page A. In general, as more pages on the web points to your site, the greater the PageRank will be.
Note also that number of links going out of the page penalize the PageRank of that page.
Of course, it is highly possible that Google has altered or modified this formula but at least it serves as a starting point for SEO Web design. Link-building aims to boost PageRank. Writing highly informative contents will also gain more referral from different webpages. Social media promotions, especially “dofollow” ones, could also gather great number of links among millions of internet users. Every SEO web design must, therefore, aim on optimizing evaluation points on Google’s PageRank Algorithm.
