I am flash developer/designer full-time, and a freelance writer and artist, part-time. That said, you can see why I wanted to write this article about cool flash templates I have found. So, first, for anyone not familiar with what I mean by flash, flash is the premier method of allowing frame based animation in web sites. There are literally thousands of flash web sites across the web. If you’ve surfed the web for even a sort time, assuredly you’ve come across flash sites or at least elements in a site which are rum by flash, such as: web-based games, cartoon frames and animations, videos, and many other applications.

So what exactly is a flash template, and why am I after cool flash templates? Well a template, for those unfamiliar, is like a kit. A template is like a pre-made web site, which allow a developer like me to come in and easily edit it.

Many templates are so easily designed, that even beginners to flash design can edit these templates well enough to have a fairly cool site. So whether you’re a flash professional or just someone in search of a web site that will offer your visitors something more than just text, finding cool flash templates is crucial.

I guess the next logical question would be: What makes a cool flash template, well, cool?

This is highly subjective. Obviously, there are custom made flash sites that I’ve done and that other flash developers have done which blow any template you might be able to find out of the water. That should be understood, because the templates (cool flash templates or not) are just kits. For instance, if you buy a kit for a home, it probably not be as cool as one you get custom built, hiring architects and other home design professionals. However, there are many things I look at when determining what makes a cool flash template. (Note: the link to this template can be found at the end of the article)

First is mouse-over effects. A mouse-over effect is something that occurs when the mouse hovers over it. This cool flash template is geared towards the person building a fantasy gamers’ site. So, as you can see, the site transforms your mouse cursor into a medieval looking weapon. The little chain that is attached to the pointer moves very smoothly and realistically.

Second are the transitions. See, how when you click to enter the site how the fire burns in the center and then the new frames of the site appear. Transitions between pages (There aren’t really multiple pages in most flash sites. It’s all one big animation.) help to create what determines a really cool flash template as opposed to a more plain or boring one.

Last, is surprising or interesting animations. There are many in this site, but what I found interesting and what made me finally deem this a cool flash template were the randomized bugs that crawl about the page, as if you were in a actual dungeon. They come out of the cracks and scurry along the side of the page. Creepy, but cool.

Of course, this list is not exhaustive, and there are many things beside this that have to come together to make a cool flash template. This template is offered in many places, but I offered in many places. I’ll offer a link to this site, because it’s only $ 20 here: http://www.theflashslash.com/preview/site48.php Also most all of their sites are $ 20.
